Manali Travel Guide

Manali Travel Guide: Manali sits in the Kullu Valley, ringed by snow peaks, pine forests, apple orchards, and enough high-altitude passes to keep you busy for days. The town has two very different personalities: the crowded mall-road side, and the calmer old-Manali side with cafes and homestays. Knowing where to base yourself shapes your entire experience.

How to go to Manali

1. By Air (fastest)

Nearest airport: Bhuntar (Kullu Airport) – 50 km from Manali

Flights mainly from Delhi and sometimes Chandigarh

Travel time from airport to Manali: 1.5–2 hours by taxi

Taxi fare: roughly ₹2000–₹3000

Good to know:
Weather delays are common because it’s a small valley airport. If you want reliability, fly to Chandigarh instead and continue by road.

2. By Train

Manali doesn’t have a railway station. These are the usable ones:

Nearest broad-gauge stations:

Chandigarh (310 km)

Una Himachal (250 km)

Pathankot (290 km)

From any of these, you take a bus or taxi to Manali.

3. By Road (most popular)

This is how most people reach Manali, and the routes are straightforward.

Route options:

From Delhi → Manali

Distance: ~540 km
Time: 12–14 hours
Route: Delhi → Sonipat → Panipat → Karnal → Kurukshetra → Ambala → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali

You’ll find both Volvo buses and private taxis easily.

From Chandigarh → Manali

Distance: ~300 km
Time: 7–9 hours
Route: Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Pandoh → Kullu → Manali

Smoothest option if you want the least travel time.

From Shimla → Manali

Distance: ~250 km
Time: 7–8 hours
Route: Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Jalori Pass (seasonal) → Kullu → Manali

Beautiful but slower because of hill roads.

From Dharamshala / McLeodganj → Manali

Distance: ~220 km
Time: 6–7 hours

4. By Bus (budget-friendly and easy)

Options from Delhi:

HRTC Volvo

HPTDC Volvo

Private Volvo (Sleeper/Seater)

Departure points:

Kashmiri Gate ISBT (main one)

Majnu ka Tila (private operators)

Arrival:

Manali Volvo Bus Stand near Mall Road

Timings: Mostly overnight

Ticket Range: ₹900–₹1800

Recommend depending on your style:

For comfort:

Fly to Chandigarh → taxi/Volvo to Manali.

For budget:

Overnight Volvo bus from Delhi.

For road-trip lovers:

Drive from Chandigarh or Delhi; the mountain stretch after Mandi is scenic.
