Pune, Maharashtra – At least four tourists lost their lives and several others are feared drowned after a bridge over the Indrayani River in Kundmala collapsed on Sunday. The area, a popular monsoon destination, was crowded at the time of the incident.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that 39 people have been rescued so far. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed at the site. Authorities say scores of tourists were on the bridge when it gave way, and some were reportedly swept away by the swollen river.
The Chief Minister announced ₹5 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased and assured that the government will cover the medical expenses of the injured. “Relief work has been immediately accelerated,” Fadnavis said in a statement.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar attributed the collapse to the poor condition of the bridge and the excessive load due to the crowd and two-wheelers.
Search and rescue operations continue on a war footing.
